Anniversary
Fifty five years it’s been today
I remember that first day.
After the wedding I went back
That evening your mother and
No honeymoon, no fancy dinner,
That someday I would make
You never cared, two
You would have been content,
We had so many honeymoons,
You enjoyed them all. We enjoyed
ANNIVERSARY
since we were wed.
I reflect on all those years
and I can only feel happiness.
No fancy wedding, just us
and the Justice of the Peace.
We had to borrow a witness.
to work and you went
grocery shopping and to our
one room apartment.
father came by
to wish us well,
our first visitors.
nothing, nothing.
I had made you a promise,
so impossible to keep.
for what I knew you deserved.
But how? For as the years went
by the dream did not flower.
beautiful children
Made you so happy,
you needed nothing else.
happy,
if that was all there ever was.
Fate had other plans.
so many fancy balls.
So many feasts, so many party’s
Life was so good.
then all.
I reflect on all those years
and I can only feel happiness.Jack Leach May 20, 2008
